This village is a prime candidate for help for these reasons:
The problem is clear and deadly, and it affects everyone.
Outside agencies have provided minimal help in this particular area, but village residents work hard to help themselves.
The villagers organize themselves through Mama na Dada Africa, a Kenyan NGO, and they have created several successful projects already, including a health clinic, a high school, and a day-care center for AIDS orphans. Some villagers volunteer as many as 50 hours a week at the day-care center and as health workers for their neighbors. Many have adopted AIDS orphans.
We lived in Kunya for a time and saw for ourselves how hard the villagers work, how honest and generous they are, how grateful they are.
Through Mama na Dada Africa, they have a design for a system to purify and distribute water from the lake. They have built part of the system. They know what they need, and they have done all they can to provide it for themselves. What they still need is money to finish their system. (And that's where you can help!)
Mama na Dada Africa has a partner in Seattle, Village Volunteers. Through this partner, contributions are tax-deductible in the U.S. In addition, Village Volunteers funds its overhead expenses through other means and passes 100% of contributions on to its partners in Africa, so all of your contribution will go to help build the water system.
